Inspiring the next generation of aviators at Aviation Career Pathways’ annual Aviation Career Day

FORT WORTH, TEXAS — The CR Smith Museum, in partnership with American Airlines, held its annual Aviation Career Day Nov. 8, offering over 600 local middle and high school students in grades 7 through 12 an exclusive opportunity to explore diverse career pathways in the aviation industry. As part of the Aviation Career Pathways program, this event brought students face-to-face with STEM professionals, providing immersive experiences that highlighted the wide array of career opportunities available within aviation.

Aviation Career Day is a cornerstone of the Museum’s mission to inspire the next generation of aviators and to make STEM and aviation careers accessible to students from all backgrounds. This year, the event provided exposure to more than 40 different careers across the aviation industry, from aircraft maintenance technicians to pilots, cybersecurity experts, and more. By connecting students with professionals in the field, the event helped build confidence and a sense of belonging in aviation, opening students’ eyes to possibilities they might not have previously considered.

Hands-on Learning and Immersive Experiences

Throughout the day, students had the chance to dive into hands-on activities, including flight simulator sessions and opportunities to fly drones in the Museum’s drone cage. These interactive experiences allowed students to explore aviation technology and gain practical insights into the skills needed for careers in the industry.

In addition to the immersive activities, students learned about valuable resources available to support their educational and career journeys, such as aviation scholarship opportunities from organizations like the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP), Sisters of the Skies, and Breaking Down Barriers.

Connecting Students with Industry Experts

The event featured a panel of aviation experts who shared their personal stories and career advice. Students had the chance to ask questions and learn from professionals who began their careers in aviation at a young age, just like many of the students in attendance. This personal connection helped reinforce the idea that anyone can succeed in aviation, regardless of their background.

Aviation Career Day also provided students with the opportunity to connect one-on-one with more than 100 volunteers from American Airlines, who generously offered their time to share real-world career insights and advice. These touchpoints were designed to inspire students and give them a firsthand look at the many career paths available.

Looking Ahead

The CR Smith Museum’s Aviation Career Pathways program, which includes events like Aviation Career Day, continues to play a pivotal role in creating a diverse and inclusive future for the aviation industry by addressing community needs and providing access to career opportunities.

With the goal of providing meaningful career exploration opportunities, the program serves students from the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) and the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD), engaging them in interactive learning experiences both in the classroom and at American Airlines’ facilities.

Through this program, the CR Smith Museum and American Airlines hope to cultivate the next generation of aviation professionals, empowering students to see themselves in the field and feel confident about their potential in the world of aviation.
