The American Airlines CR Smith Museum is excited to announce our Layover Aviation STEM Camps. Layover camps are a terrific way for students to enjoy some of our campers’ favorite activities from the summer’s programming, including hands-on engineering challenges, behind-the-scenes access to American’s operation, flight simulator training and much more. There will be winter and spring session camps for students in third to sixth grade and seventh to 10th grade.

Layover Aviation STEM Winter Camp

About the curriculum

The CR Smith Museum will host a Layover Aviation STEM Winter Camp with sessions for students in third to sixth grade (Dec. 28 to 29) and students in seventh to 10th grade (Dec. 19 to 21). Camp sessions are tailored for each age group.

Your camper will get hands-on experience with STEM in the aviation industry, no matter their grade level. The condensed curriculum is built with two themes at its core:

Experiential learning

That means hands-on science and engineering workshops and dedicated flight simulator instruction by trained camp staff.

Career exploration

Students will take field trips and connect with American Airlines professionals to learn about the airline’s operation and various career paths. Pilots, flight attendants, IT specialists, engineers, mechanics, meteorologists, graphic designers are just some professions within the industry!

Camp & registration details

Spots are limited. There are 16 spots available in each session, plus two additional spots per session for scholarship recipients.

Session dates

Grades 7 to 10: Dec. 19 to 21

Grades 3 to 6: Dec. 28 to 29


Camp sessions: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Early drop-off/ late pick-up: 8 to 9 a.m. and/or 4 to 5 p.m., additional $10 per day. Note: If choosing to add extended hours, you must purchase extended hours for all days in your student’s respective camp.

If the session for your child’s age group is full, please add your name to the waitlist. If spots become available, the Museum team will contact individuals on the list in the order of waitlist submission. If contacted, individuals will have 24 hours to respond to the Museum team to provide confirmation of child’s attendance and payment to secure the camp spot. If an individual doesn’t respond in this timeframe, the Museum will contact the next individual on the waitlist.

Frequently asked questions

It’s important to know that our summer camps feature new programming each year. Our layover camps take campers’ favorite activities from the summer’s programming in a condensed timeframe. If your child attended the Aviation STEM Summer Camp, programming will be similar to what they experienced in the summer, however, they are always welcome to join us for layover camps to continue to build their skill sets and friendships!

Yes! If you select to add extended hours to your child’s registration, you may drop your child off between 8-9 a.m. and/or pick them up between 4-5 p.m. Note: When purchasing extended hours, you will purchase it for all days in your child’s camp. Please be aware that late fees will apply if you pick up your child after 5 p.m.

Unfortunately, no. We want our campers to have the best experience possible. Our camps are designed to meet the needs of our campers not only academically, but also their socio-emotional needs by allowing them to form meaningful bonds with their peers. If your child’s age group is full, make sure to join the waitlist! A spot may open up.

In the case that a spot opens up in a session for your child’s grade level, the Museum team will call and email you to reserve the spot. You must respond within 24 hours of our outreach. If not, we will move to the next person on the list. We appreciate you understanding.

Although each day is different, your camper can expect:

Students can also expect built-in free time to explore the Museum.

There is a maximum of 18 students per camp session. This allows camp staff to give individual campers the attention they deserve to have a successful experience.

Yes, please pack your child’s lunch, snacks and a refillable water bottle.

Campers will receive a camp T-shirt on the first day of camp. We ask that campers wear the provided T-shirt every day as we will embark on field trips and it will help our camp staff easily identify each student. We recommend bringing a sweater as it can be cool in the classroom. Closed toed shoes are required.

Our camp staff go through comprehensive training to lead a safe and worthwhile camp experience for your child.  Additionally, the Museum and Marie Eve Poirier-Harris, director of Museum education, were awarded the 2021 Million Women Mentors – Texas Stand Up for STEM Educational Organization and Educator awards.

The health and safety of your child is our priority. The Museum cannot prevent campers or their parents from becoming exposed to, contracting, or spreading COVID-19 while attending the Layover Aviation STEM Winter Camp and utilizing the CR Smith Museum’s services or premises. Therefore, if your child attends Layover Aviation STEM Winter Camp at the Museum and/or enters onto the Museum’s premises your child may be exposed to and/or be at increased risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19. By allowing your child to participate in the Museum’s programs, you express your awareness of and agreement with these risks. The Museum may share additional pandemic-related guidelines with registered campers before the session’s start date. Failure to abide by these guidelines may result in a dismissal from camp activities without compensation.

No refunds and a cancellation fee of $100 applies to cancellations requested 21 days or less prior to the registered camp session.
