Full time – Head of Operations and Experience

Job Description:

The CR Smith Museum, an independent tax‐exempt organization affiliated with American Airlines, tells the history and “story” of American Airlines (AA), its legacy carriers and of the aviation industry. Its facility comprises over 40,000 SF including a theater, permanent exhibition hall, a classroom, temporary exhibition space and a hangar featuring a restored 1940’s DC‐3 aircraft. The Museum runs education programs that advance careers in aviation and that educate the general public and children K‐12 about aviation and STEM related topics. The institution recently entered an exciting period of transition and rebuilding with new leadership on the Board and staff side and a new strategy for growth.

In preparation for the associated work, the Museum is looking to expand its team with the addition of an important new senior specialist position dedicated to operations and visitor experience. The Head of Operations and Experience will ensure the Museum runs smoothly and efficiently, delivering a positive visitor experience that is in line with organizational objectives. This will include oversight of key front‐of‐house areas including admissions and sales, retail, exhibition planning and development, as well as associated support functions including technology/IT, exhibition maintenance and facility maintenance. The position will report into the Museum’s Executive Director. It will be on a Tuesday to Saturday schedule.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Oversee general operations and FOH
  • Manager in charge, especially on Saturdays
  • Coordinate team and volunteer schedules where needed to ensure appropriate staffing
  • Provide temporary support to FOH team if/where needed during peak times
  • Emergency planning and training
  • Oversee maintenance and repair of exhibits, maximizing reliability and minimizing down times
  • Work with the team on standards for visitor orientation throughout both the customer facing physical experience and online; establish and maintain standard operating policies and procedures
  • Drive earned revenue; provide tracking and reporting of key metrics as well as strategies for improvement
  • Drive exhibition and public program planning in close collaboration with colleagues in charge of archive, education and marketing; oversee exhibition development where applicable
  • Drive analysis of the retail business and develop strategies for growing gross sales and margin, both for brick-and‐mortar and online sales
  • Support annual budgeting process; strategic planning; fundraising if/as needed

Job Qualifications

  • Experience in a similar function in a museum or visitor attraction
  • Experience managing teams
  • Team player with low ego, able to work effectively with a wide range of people
  • Strong communication skills are essential
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, flexible, and adaptable
  • Able to multitask, think on his/her feet, and stay calm under pressure
  • Affinity for the Museum’s mission
  • Bachelors Degree preferred
  • Minimum 3-5 years museum experience preferred
